Tips for living a less toxic, healthier lifestyle - Part Two
Healthy Oils: Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Avocado Oil
Olive oil is the oldest edible oil in the world. In 2014, archaeologists in Israel unearthed shards of pottery a mile from the city of Nazareth, which contained traces of 8,000-year-old olive oil, the oldest ever discovered.
Try our selection of organic extra virgin olive oils
Nutrition and cooking experts agree that one of the most versatile and healthy oils to cook with and eat is olive oil, as long as it's Extra Virgin. An “Extra Virgin” label means that the olive oil is not refined, but cold pressed as heat decreases the nutritional value and quality of the oil.
Both healthy and convenient
The predominant fatty acid in olive oil is a monounsaturated fat called oleic acid, making up 73% of the total oil content. Monounsaturated fats are also quite resistant to high heat, making extra virgin olive oil a healthy choice for cooking. Extra virgin olive oil is loaded with antioxidants, some of which have powerful biological effects.
Many Olive Oils you see on the supermarket shelf are blended; as long as they contain some Olive Oil: they can call it Olive oil. A good rule of thumb- the less expensive the more likely it is a blend.
Olive or Avocado?
Both Avocado Oil and Olive Oil have essentially the same nutritional value. Avocado oil is higher in monosaturated fats (good fat) than olive oil. Avocado oil has a higher flash point so is better to use for cooking with high temperatures. It is great for deep frying, baking or air fryers. Olive oil is higher in Vitamin-E than Avocado oil.
As you can see, they both have their "pros" and very few "cons".
